SR-22 and SR-22A in Georgia: What’s the Difference and How Do Drivers Get Their License Back?

If your license has been suspended and you’ve been told you need an SR-22 or SR-22A, the paperwork and process can feel overwhelming. Understanding the difference between these two forms and knowing what steps to take next can make the path forward much clearer.

What Is an SR-22?

An SR-22 is a certificate of financial responsibility that your auto insurance company files with the state on your behalf. It confirms that you carry at least the state-required minimum liability coverage. In Georgia, drivers who have committed various offenses, such as DUI, reckless driving and multiple traffic violations in a short period, may be required to have an SR-22.

What Is an SR-22A?

An SR-22A is also a financial responsibility certificate that is ordered for Georgia drivers who commit specific, repeated offenses. Key distinctions include:

  • It is typically required for drivers who are convicted multiple times for driving without insurance.
  • It requires you to pay your full six-month premium up front rather than in monthly installments, so you remain continuously insured.

How Drivers Get Their Licenses Back

Once the required filing is in place, the reinstatement process generally involves paying any applicable reinstatement fees, serving out any mandatory suspension period and maintaining continuous coverage for the duration required by the state, typically three years for both SR-22s and SR-22As. A lapse in coverage can reset that timeline and trigger another suspension.

Getting the Right Coverage

Filing an SR-22 or SR-22A does not have to mean settling for inadequate auto insurance coverage.
